Who rescued who?
I have loved animals since I was a child. I longed to live in places where they roamed freely. I watched television shows about lions and elephants in Africa, and dogs and cats in other places. My parents allowed me to have only a few small birds, but no other pets. My desire to be around these wonderful beings only grew with the limited opportunities I had during my childhood. Over time, I launched an animal rescue organization that gradually became a sanctuary. My dream came true. I did not need to travel to sanctuaries in other countries. I simply created one.
Little did I know that the rescuer would end up being rescued. In the face of the dire needs that abandoned animals often endure, I was reminded of those moments when I also felt that I could not always face life alone. In meeting their needs, I discovered that our worth and purpose, even when unique, are not necessarily solitary endeavors. Each sanctuary resident has brought forth experiences and lessons that have resonated deeply. In the process of creating well-being for animals, I have healed, grown, and learned. I have become a more authentic version of myself.
I've also seen a side of animals that isn't always acknowledged. The depth of their understanding of the world is something we could all benefit from if we would only listen. Animals can be extraordinary teachers. That's why this sanctuary is as much for me as it is for them.
I offer you Rescue Storytime , a reflection of my journey and the haven that is the Rescue Buddies Sanctuary, in the hope that, by witnessing the wonders of mutual rescue, you can participate in our magnificent path towards shared healing and growth. Inspired by real-life events, these are books for children of all ages.
A friend once gave me a mug that says, “Who Rescued Who?” Those words hold an undeniable, life-changing truth. Now I give them to you. Make them your own by embarking on a meaningful rescue mission through which, by helping others, you nourish your own life.
With love,
